Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, commonly referred to as manic-depressive illness, is a neurological condition characterized by significant fluctuations in an individual’s mood, energy levels, and overall functionality. Unlike the typical emotional variations experienced by everyone, bipolar disorder manifests in severe symptoms that can lead to strained relationships, impaired job or academic performance, and, in extreme cases, suicide. Approximately 5.7 million adults in the United States, representing around 2.6 percent of the population aged 18 and older in any given year, grapple with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood, although some individuals may experience initial symptoms in childhood or later in life. It often goes unnoticed as a medical condition, leading to prolonged suffering before receiving proper diagnosis and intervention.

Similar to chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder necessitates ongoing, careful management throughout an individual’s lifetime. Given its association with abnormalities in the reward system, the repeated activation of prefrontal regions and the deeper reward-related network, facilitated by Deep TMS™, holds promise for effectively treating this persistent ailment.

Conventional Treatments

Standard treatments involve using different combinations of antidepressants and mood stabilizers, such as lithium. Nevertheless, there is a lack of consensus and limited clinical data concerning the efficacy of these treatments, and there’s a potential concern that antidepressant medication could worsen the severity and frequency of manic episodes in individuals with bipolar disorder. The use of conventional antidepressants may even precipitate a manic attack or expedite the bipolar cycle.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is employed as a treatment option in instances of treatment-resistant manic or depressive episodes, or when medication leads to severe side effects.
